An annunciator is a panel that displays the state of alarm zones or monitored points, using lamps, printed labels or a small display, and it often includes test and acknowledge controls. It puts many sensors in one place so staff can see which zone is in alarm without opening management software.
Before software dashboards, an annunciator was how a building told its staff that something was wrong. Many sites still keep one near a main entrance because it works without a login.
Annunciator and alarm panel
The annunciator is a display, not the decision maker. The panel or controller holds the zones and the logic, and the annunciator repeats their state at a second location. Some panels build the display into the enclosure; others use a separate unit in a lobby or guard office.
A layout that helps under pressure
Labels should name the area in the building’s own language, not a bare zone number. Group points by floor or function so a row of lamps maps to a floor plan. Keep silence and acknowledge controls nearby, and confirm the lamp test is part of the routine maintenance check.
