Security for Self-Storage Facilities in Colorado

Self-storage security is a coverage problem: long aisles, multiple gates and a site that is often unstaffed. The system needs cameras that can see down an aisle at night, recording that survives the weather, and alerts that filter wildlife and shadows instead of burying the manager.

Self-storage security is a coverage problem: long aisles, multiple gates and a site that is often unstaffed. The system needs cameras that can see down an aisle at night, recording that survives the weather, and alerts that filter wildlife and shadows instead of burying the manager.

A storage facility is a set of long, repetitive views. A camera that covers one aisle does not cover the next, and a wide lens at the gate rarely identifies a plate or a person. The layout has to be walked and the views tested before the camera count means anything.

We design gate, aisle and perimeter coverage as one system, with the recording and network sized for the site rather than added afterwards.

Covering gates, aisles and the perimeter

The gate is where vehicles and people enter, so it carries the highest identification requirement. Aisles need cameras that can resolve a person at the far end, not just detect movement. The perimeter needs enough light and resolution to show a fence line without turning the whole site into glare.

  • Gate cameras positioned for plate and vehicle identification, not just overview.
  • Aisle cameras with the lens length and height chosen for the distance.
  • Perimeter coverage that accounts for fence lines, lighting and neighboring property.
  • Long-range infrared where the site has no practical lighting.

Recording that survives an unstaffed site

Storage sites are often unattended overnight and in bad weather. The recorder, storage and network have to keep working when nobody is there to notice a failed disk or a dropped camera.

We specify storage for the retention the operator needs, and we use RAID or edge storage where a single failure would lose the footage that matters.

  • Recording capacity sized for the retention period, not the camera count.
  • RAID or edge recording where a disk failure is unacceptable.
  • UPS protection for the recorder and network equipment.
  • Weather-rated cabling, switches and enclosures.

Reducing false alerts in a repetitive site

A storage site generates constant motion: gates, branches, wildlife, shadows and weather. Generic motion alerts become noise within a week. Human and vehicle filtering, combined with rules around the gate and the fence line, is what makes alerts usable.

We set the analytics around the events that matter, then tune them after a period of real site activity.

Working with an existing facility system

Many facilities already have cameras, a gate controller and an access system. We can extend or replace the weak part rather than starting over, provided the existing equipment supports the required protocol and the recording chain is sound.

We inspect the existing cameras, recorder and network before promising what can be reused.

Frequently asked questions

Can you cover every aisle without a camera in every aisle?

Often not completely, but the number can usually be reduced by placing cameras at aisle ends and intersections with the right lens. The site walk decides the actual coverage; a camera count without a walk is a guess.

Do you integrate with gate and access systems?

Where the gate or access controller supports integration, we can link access events to camera views so a manager can see who entered and when. The existing equipment determines what is possible.

How long should a storage facility keep footage?

That depends on the operator, the insurer and how quickly incidents are usually reported. We size storage to the retention you choose and explain the cost of extending it.
