Malware protection is the practice of preventing, detecting and removing malicious software such as ransomware, trojans and spyware. In a security system it covers the recorders, server, workstations and phones that hold video and access data, which are networked computers like any other.
A recorder is rarely patched like a laptop and often sits on a flat network. That combination is exactly what ransomware campaigns look for.
How it reaches a system
Common routes are a remote-access portal exposed to the internet, a weak administrator password, an infected laptop on the same subnet, or an unpatched camera firmware flaw.
The practical defenses
Patch and inventory devices, remove default accounts, segment cameras and recorders, keep offline backups of configuration, and make sure someone owns the update schedule.
