A video management system is the software layer that runs a camera estate: live viewing, recording, playback, users and integrations. It can run on a recorder, a server or in the cloud, and it is what operators actually use every day.
The VMS is the interface between the cameras and the people who use them. A strong camera system with a poor VMS is frustrating; a modest camera system with a well-configured VMS is usable.
VMS and NVR
An NVR is a device that records and often includes its own management software. A VMS can be that software, or a separate platform that manages multiple recorders and sites.
What to plan
Decide who needs to view, what they need to see, and how footage is exported. Multi-site organizations usually need a consistent user experience across buildings; a single site may only need a simple local view.
- User roles and permissions.
- Live-view layouts by area or floor.
- Export and evidence-handling process.
- Integrations with access control and alarms.
