A vulnerability assessment is a systematic review that identifies weaknesses in devices, software and configuration. It scans hosts, checks firmware versions and reads settings, then ranks findings by severity. Unlike a penetration test, it identifies and prioritizes rather than exploiting what it finds.
Assessment is the inventory step of fixing things. It shows what is exposed and how urgent each item is, which is exactly the input a maintenance plan needs.
What it covers
Unpatched firmware, default credentials, exposed management ports, weak encryption and unnecessary services are typical findings, along with missing logging, untested backups and hardware that no longer receives updates.
From findings to fixes
Rank each finding by exposure and by consequence, then group the work: what closes this week, what needs a maintenance window and what requires budgeting. Re-scan after changes, since fixes introduce new configuration and sometimes new exposure.
