Avigilon Video and Access Control for Colorado Sites

Avigilon, owned by Motorola Solutions, combines high-resolution cameras with the Avigilon Control Center video platform and the Alta cloud access control line. SecureComm installs and services Avigilon systems in Denver and across Colorado, covering camera design, server and storage sizing, access control and support after the installation.

Avigilon is built around the search rather than the timeline: describe the person or vehicle you are after and let the software surface the candidate clips instead of scrubbing hours of video. That capability is the reason the platform has to be designed as a system rather than assembled from a camera list. The software decides which servers, storage and network the site needs, and that is where the project is won or lost.

It suits an organization with several buildings, a control room and a genuine investigative workload, where camera counts are high enough that finding footage is a daily task. It suits a small office far less, because the platform’s advantages arrive with server hardware and per-camera licensing that a dozen cameras cannot absorb. We look at the investigation pattern before recommending it, and we say when a lighter platform is the better answer.

Cameras, ACC and the analytics they feed

The cameras range from compact domes to high-resolution models intended for wide-area coverage, and several of them classify a scene at the edge before it reaches the server. The Avigilon Control Center client is where an operator lives: live view, playback, alarms, maps and search. On a multi-site deployment the same interface reaches every recorder, which is the part that changes how a control room works.

The analytics classify people and vehicles and support an appearance search across recorded video, so an operator can follow a person from one camera to the next instead of watching hours of timeline. Results are only as good as the placement and the scene. A camera looking down a corridor at an oblique angle gives the software less to work with than one at a doorway, hard backlight defeats classification regardless of the model, and low winter sun is the backlight that catches most west-facing entrances in Colorado.

Server sizing and licensing decide the outcome

Avigilon runs on Windows servers on site, and the sizing exercise is where deployments stall. Camera count, resolution, frame rate, retention and the number of analytics all change processor and disk load, and analytics are the variable most often underestimated. A server that records comfortably can still be short of processing once every channel is classifying objects. A closet built for a file server can run warm once it holds video processing, so the room and its cooling belong in the design rather than in the punch list.

Storage should come from real bitrates and a retention policy the organization has agreed, not from a default. Licensing is per camera and per feature set, and it moves with the camera when hardware is replaced, so a current license inventory belongs beside the asset list. For a Colorado campus with several buildings, redundancy is a decision about how much video must survive losing the building that holds the server.

Access control next to the cameras

Alta is the cloud-managed access control line in the family, and it fits an organization that wants doors administered centrally without a server on every site. Readers, door hardware, power and free egress still have to be installed properly at each opening, and the credential decision still matters: a mobile credential and a smart card behave differently when a phone is lost or a card is shared. On a Colorado exterior door, freeze-thaw and afternoon sun wear out a reader long before the controller does, so the housing, the seal and the drip line get as much attention as the platform.

The value of one vendor appears when a door event and a camera event land in the same interface: a held door produces a clip, a badge at a reader calls up that entrance, and an investigation does not need a second person watching another screen. That integration is a design and commissioning task, not a setting. SecureComm installs and services Avigilon equipment; that describes our work, not a dealer claim.

Frequently asked questions

Will Avigilon cameras work with a different VMS?

The cameras stream over ONVIF and RTSP, so a third-party platform can usually record them. What does not travel is the Avigilon analytics, the appearance search and the alarm handling that run inside the Avigilon platform. A site that buys the cameras for those features and records them elsewhere has paid for capability it will not use.

Can an existing Avigilon system be extended instead of replaced?

Often, yes. The cameras, the server and the licenses are the three things to check: whether the camera family is still supported, whether the server has headroom for more channels, and whether the licenses are current and transferable. We audit those before quoting. Extending a sound system is usually less disruptive than a replacement, and the migration path matters more than the hardware.

What does a site need ready before an ACC installation?

A server room with power and cooling for the recording hardware, a network with capacity for the camera bitrate, a retention policy agreed by the people who use the video, and a decision about who administers accounts. Those four items delay more projects than the cameras do. We document them at design so the installation week is spent installing rather than deciding.
