Data privacy is the set of rules and practices that govern how personal information is collected, used, shared and kept. For a security system that means camera views that can identify people, recorded audio, access logs and plate reads, each with a purpose, a retention period and a defined set of people allowed to review it.
A camera system produces personal information by design. Privacy work is not an obstacle to that; it is the practice of deciding in advance who may see what, and for how long.
Privacy in a camera system
Every view of a person, every audio recording and every credential event is personal data. Notice, purpose and access are the practical controls: staff and visitors should know recording happens, the reason should be defensible, and the number of people who can review footage should be small.
Retention and access
Keep footage for a stated period and delete it on schedule, because a long archive is a long exposure. Log exports, restrict them to a named group, and exclude areas that serve no security purpose. State and federal rules differ, so the legal question belongs with counsel.
