Logical Security Controls

Logical security protects information rather than openings. It covers accounts, passwords, permissions, encryption, patching and logs on the recorders, servers and applications that run a security system. A hardened camera network depends on it as much as on the lock.

Physical and logical controls solve different halves of the same problem. A locked door is worthless if the access control server accepts a default administrator password.

The controls that count

Unique named accounts, least privilege, multi-factor authentication for administrators, current firmware, encrypted remote access and retained audit logs cover most exposures.

Why it gets neglected

Security devices are installed once and then left. Nobody owns the firmware calendar, the shared login or the former integrator account, so those are the gaps a review finds.
