Motion Detection

Motion detection triggers an action when something changes in a camera view. It can be simple pixel comparison, a passive infrared sensor responding to body heat, or a video analytic that classifies people and vehicles. The cheap version produces many false alerts.

Few settings generate more complaints than motion sensitivity. Set too high, the system cries wolf; set too low, it misses the event you needed.

Pixel, heat and object motion

Camera pixel detection watches a grid of the image for change. A PIR sensor detects infrared energy from a warm body. Analytics add classification before triggering.

Tuning without losing events

Mask the areas that always move, such as trees or a road, reduce sensitivity, require a minimum object size, and review alerts after a week of real weather.
