PTZ Camera Deployment

Deploying a PTZ camera is a placement and operations decision. The camera needs an unobstructed line of sight to each point of interest, enough light at full zoom and presets an operator will actually call. A PTZ covers one area at a time, so it supplements fixed coverage.

A PTZ fails for predictable reasons: it is aimed at a wall, zoomed into darkness, or has presets nobody set. Planning fixes all three.

Light and zoom together

Zoom magnifies, and it magnifies darkness as well. A camera that looks acceptable wide open may be unusable at full telephoto, so check the scene at night and at maximum zoom before accepting the position.

Presets and patrols

Define the points of interest with the people who will watch them, name the presets and test each one after installation. An unset PTZ becomes an expensive fixed camera pointed wherever it was left.
